I have become a family history teacher and in the process have discovered new family members in my ward. One Sunday I taught the High Priest group (25-30 men) about genealogy. I love teaching and had a great time teaching the men. I happened to mention that my family settled Smithfield during this class and had brought a box of family histories to show.
After the class John Dietz came up to me and had a conversation about his family in Smithfield. He asked about my family and we found that my grandmother Eva is his aunt. It really is a small world. So Sunday night we were invited to his home and met with another cousin Faris Joe and spoke about our family. It was a fun night to share stories with everyone and I found it very enjoyable. I met three of John's children and their families. I am so excited to have some relatives close and we have already exchanged genealogy information.
Tonight I am working with the young men to teach them how to do their genealogy on the computer. I hope the results are as good as the young women and also that their parents will come. It has been a wonderful journey for me to work with the youth. I am now planning a workshop for the 10-12 year old primary age children to learn about family history.
