Who is your hero? That is a question that I asked my Seminary students at the beginning of the school year. The students had to go find who their hero was and then find their testimony of the Savior in the Book of Mormon. The assignment was very easy but for some it was difficult to find the reference they needed. Every hero in the book testified of Jesus Christ.
As I read and studied it became harder and harder to choose a hero. At the beginning I loved King Benjamin because he taught the people and did not make them support him but he went out and supported himself. He set a good example of leadership. I was amazed that after he gave his speech his people were so moved that they all decided to make a covenant to keep the commandments. I loved how he testified of Jesus Christ and also how he told the people the principles they needed to follow to become more Christlike.
Then Nephi became my hero. He agonized about how his brothers treated him and even had to flee for his life when his father died, taking his family and everyone that would follow with him. Nephi was heroic because he was courageous in the face of adversity. I loved it when he built a ship even though he did not know how. Nephi faced Laban who took all of his riches and would not give them what they wanted.
Alma the Elder and Gideon were heroes as were the sons of Mosiah. I read about Moroni's lonely journey and how even though everyone he loved and knew were dead he fulfilled his holy calling.
To me a hero is someone who is able to bear adversity, overcome sin, and come out triumphant through it all. There are heroes throughout the scriptures but the one who is the greatest hero is Jesus Christ.
